How God Reinvigorates Us When We are Discouraged

Acts 18:9-10

In our effort to be a light for Christ in a broken world we often encounter aggressive opposition to the gospel and the Lord Jesus Christ. Often, we may feel pummeled by repeated spiritual battles, and it can leave us discouraged. Paul faced a similar dynamic in his ministry in Corinth when he worked so hard to convey the gospel to the Corinthian Jews, yet they rejected it passionately. All of Paul’s hard work in reaching them was not received.

In this moment God comforted Paul and reinvigorated his mission work. We must not overlook that God spoke to Paul in his discouragement. This is a blessing to every truly born-again believer in Jesus Christ. God speaks to us. He speaks through His Word. Let that wondrous truth sink in first. Then we must consider what he said to Paul. He tells him to not give into the temptation of fear, first. Then God quickly refocuses Paul on the next gospel opportunity. He tells him to continue sharing the gospel and to not give into the temptation of silence. Many Christians have given into this temptation of silence. They are not vocal with the Good News. They are attending church, giving, serving, and being silent toward lost people because of fear. They need to hear this exhortation from God to Paul to not be afraid and to lift their voice for His Name’s sake.

God in His grace and mercy does not simply want us to charge out there and jump on a street corner, however. Rather, He enables us for the work He calls us to by providing us with three promises. First, He promises His presence. Isn’t it amazing that God has given His creatures His presence to watch over us. If you had to face a bully alone you would be scared; but when your big brother comes to school with you and then you face the bully, it’s a whole different ball game isn’t it. That is a very poor illustration to give us a small glimpse into this wonderful truth. God faces all opposition to the gospel message right there with us.

Second, God promises His protection to assure us that we cannot be harmed by the opposition. Even in death, dear brother, and sister, you will remain unharmed because of our God’s promise. Thirdly, God promises to Paul and to us His people. God will raise up fellow, future brothers, and sisters in Christ through our obedience to be a present, verbal, vocal, joyful witness for Him despite the discouragement. These wonderful promises from God—from His heart to our hearts—should reinvigorate us when we are discouraged. God bless you.

Pray:

  • For an awareness of God’s presence by faith in this promise
  • For an awareness of God’s protection by faith in this promise
  • For an awareness of God’s people by faith in this promise
