"to equip the saints" -Ephesians 4:12a

Devotional: “The Son of the Most High God” (Luke 1:32)

“The Son of the Most High God” is a name for God used to denote His supremacy and greatness and surpassing transcendence over all things. This Name for God is worth letting it sink in for a few minutes. In the holiday season and in life in general there are many things and people and circumstances that can easily distract us and dis-attract us from God. Every day is jam-packed with things to accomplish and things to do, and it can be overwhelming. It can be easy to get caught up in the busyness and cares of this world and realize we’ve been missing intimacy with God and resting in His sovereignty.

How do we incorporate the implications of this Name for God into our daily lives? We need to remind ourselves in the good times that they come from the hand of Jesus, the Son of the Most High God. In the hard times or rough circumstances we need to pause and acknowledge that God is higher than and greater than the circumstance, and He is in sovereign control over it. He will work it out. When our schedules are changed and our plans go awry, we can pray to the Most High God, knowing He will work it out. When we face a disappointing circumstance or the disappointment of a person in our lives, we can lift our minds and hearts to the Son of the Most High God and receive His peace and comfort.

Certain times of the year we can see stress levels rise on a larger scale, such as holidays like Christmas and others. As hard working Americans, we get into our routines of life; when they are altered we can get majorly thrown off kilter and begin fretting. This isn’t God’s best modus operandi for believers, however. God’s Names, attributes, principles, and promises should inform our thinking and our feeling so that when everyone else is being jolted by shifting circumstances we can come alongside them and point them to the Light of the world, “The Son of the Most High God.” He’s higher than that troubling schedule change. He’s higher than that disappointment and missed expectation. He’s higher than the deepest and darkest tragedy you grieve and get up every day trying to press forward through. He’s higher than the brokenness of this world. He is higher and greater than any of it. He’s higher than _________________, you name it.

How to Pray:

  • Tell God the specific areas of your life you will entrust to Him.
  • Tell God that “The Son of the Most High God” is greater than the circumstance that troubles you.
  • Thank Him for being your, personal “Son of the Most High God,” unmatched by any of the brokenness you face.
