Review: Last lesson we saw how God keeps His promises and that believers should long for greater longings that God be worshiped and glorified with every fiber of our beings.
Title: God’s Messiah
Text: Psalm 110:1-7
Key Verse: Hebrews 4:14-15, “14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Theme: The Messiah will reign forever.
Introduction: Hope is important isn’t it? why is hope so important? What can cause a person to lose hope?Sometimes in the Christian life we feel the brokenness more than others, in the news internationally, and it can even hot closer to home. Though we may be tempted by the evil one to be discouraged or t lose hope, take heart through God’s Word in this lesson. The Messiah’s redemptive plan is still marching on—though we grieve—there is a good plan that culminates in the restoration of all things and the reign of King Jesus, the Messiah. Won’t that be a great day!
Main Points:
- Jesus as King (Ps. 110:1-3)
“The Lord [covenant name, Yahweh] says to my Lord: [human ruler like king David]
‘Sit at my right hand, [a place of honor, privilege, favor, and strength]
until I make your enemies your footstool.’ [brining enemies into complete submission; NT parallels are found in the work of King Jesus:
Ephesians 1:22, “22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,”
I Cor. 15:25, “25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.”
Hebrews 10:13, “13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.” Brothers and sisters we serve a conquering, victorious King!]
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter. [CSB, “…will extend your mighty scepter”; Divine, royal authority]
Rule in the midst of your enemies! [Though Israel was surrounded by many threatening enemies, the throne was secure and God was in control.]
3 Your people will offer themselves freely [His people are willing and ready to serve at a moments notice. We’re celebrating our nation’s freedom and independence, and this verse reminds me of the minutemen, ready to jump to arms at a moment’s notice for the cause of freedom. God wants those in His church to have this same readiness at a moment’s notice to serve at His bidding with willing joy and deep gratitude. He’s enlisted us y His grace!]
on the day of your power, [CSB, “of battle”]
in holy garments;[b]
from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.”
Application; Discuss how we can live with willing surrendered-ness to His Lordship in our lives.
II. Jesus as Priest (v.4)
4 “The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.’” [The priest here has other titles, “king of Salem, not Salem VA of course which is not too far from here, “priest to God Most High,” the mysterious individual who appeared and met with Abram right after the battle in Genesis 14:18-20. Jesus as messiah accomplishes the same two roles of priest and King as defined in Hebrews 5:1-10 and 7:1-22.]
Gospel: Jesus is uniquely qualified to be our priest because He shed His blood and made atonement for our sins so that we could be saved out of our sin and brokenness and then return to God’s original design for our lives in and around us.
III. Jesus as Victor (vv. 5-7)
5 The Lord is at your right hand; [CSB, “…day of his anger…”
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses; [This is how serious God is about restoring justice to this broken world under His holy and benevolent rule.]
he will shatter chiefs[d]
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.” [There will be triumphant joy in His assured victory in battle.]
Big Takeaway(s):
- Live under the authority of Jesus in practical ways.
- Come to Him as our Priest with any burdens.
- Hang onto hope that someday righteousness will be restored completely in the new kingdom.

Devotional:
Title: “Jesus is Victor from Psalm 110”
Jesus was victorious over sin, the grave, death, and assures those who place their trust in Him that He will be victorious in and through them. How do we avail ourselves to God’s victory? In salvation we reckon ourselves dead to the old life of defeat and alive to the new life through the indwelling Person and power of the Holy Spirit. We build habits of grace into our lives that do what is necessary to reinforce this new position we have been given and the practices that are to come along with it. We look with steadfast hope toward the day when His victory will be made sight in the establishment of the new Kingdom. We also must serve gladly as we are on the offense, waging a spiritual warfare against the forces of evil.
How to pray:
- Jesus, thank You for the victory given and victory assured.
