Devotional: Matthew 17:1-13
The disciples had a tendency to “get used to” Jesus, to take for granted His presence and power. In His incarnation He lived with humility, taking on the form of a servant in human flesh (Philippians 2). What humility. What servant hearted-ness. What Divine condescension. In this passage Jesus pulls back the veil and reveals His majesty, glorious beauty. Those disciples viewing this on that mountain were stunned. Peter upon seeing it recommended an equal amount of worship and homage be paid to Jesus & (!) Elijah.
This was a huge mistake. A missed opportunity for singular, precise, careful, and focused worship of the majestic King of kings and Lord of lords. No doubt, Moses and Elijah were put out by Peter’s miscalculation, as well. There is a clear warning from their behavior: We must be very careful to never worship anything along with Jesus, above Jesus, or ascribe any level of worship to anything beneath Jesus.
Worship belongs to One and only One. God the Father even corrected this error with the statement, “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Matthew 17:5b, ESV). There are key times in life to remain silent and listen, and this was one of them. The more we listen, the more we learn. God’s grace is extended toward us in correcting us when we fail to listen and reminding us to cultivate continual, worshipful listening.
Discussion &/or Reflection:
- What are 3 attributes of Jesus from this passage that help you to refocus on Him?
- How can we specifically cultivate a greater worshipful affection and awe for Jesus?
- When you’re in a tough circumstance and feel far, far away from the mountain top experience of God’s presence what helps you to continue worshiping and adoring Jesus?
